It’s been a long, loooong time since I’ve actually been out with my camera taking some photos, so I thought I’d take the opportunity over the weekend to head down to beach & take some shots in some rather stormy & incredibly windy weather.

After a rather disappointing & sometimes scary trip to Coniston Water, a couple of days later I headed to Windermere. Fortunately the roads were clearer, although there was still a thick layer of snow covering the Lake District as far as the eye could see. Having parked the car in the town around 7am, I headed up the well marked path to Orrest Head. This vantage point, offering 360 degree views of the surrounding landscape, was the first fell climbed by the great Alfred Wainwright & kick started his passion for the Lakeland hills.

It was quite eerie climbing up the heavily wooded slope in the dark with the snow crunching underfoot, especially when a mad early morning jogger appeared out of nowhere, running by torchlight. Once at the summit the view certainly didn’t disappoint & having the entire place to myself as the sun rose above the mountains behind me was simply an amazing experience. Definitely catching this landscape photography bug.

As Liverpool has only had a light dusting of the white stuff so far this winter, I’ve been slightly dubious of the claims of chaos caused by heavy snow around the rest of the country. Having headed into the Lake District earlier in the week I now no longer doubt those reports.

Having already scoped out a couple of locations that I wanted to photograph thanks to the wonders of Google Earth, the road I actually wanted to go down was impassable. In fact, driving around icy narrow country roads in the dark was hairy enough. Fortunately, as sunrise approached, I found a suitable place to leave the car & head down to the lakeside.
